Why it’s time to say goodbye to Mozy: A warm welcome to Carbonite!

by EricSB 10. December 2011 23:29

Mozy has been both a positive and a negative experience over the years.  I’ve run into issues where the restore was corrupted, and a request of a different restore in time fixed the issue, annoying, especially given how long it seemed to take for my restore to be available for download, then to have to wait for the download to finish.  The Mozy client is so poorly written that I didn’t bother to install it on my newest laptop as it loves to PEG the hard drive and I got very tired of that problem alone.

But with all of this, Mozy was ALWAYS able to get my data, regardless of what sort of fiasco went on, I was always able to get to my data, it may take a while but I could get it – this alone made Mozy worth it, that is until now.  Mozy, in their infinite wisdom decided to charge arbitrary amounts of money depending on how much space your backup is taking up, never mind that I originally started using Mozy because it was UNLIMITED, things change.  In my case the new yearly bill would be  $209.79.  WOW!   So let me get this straight… Mozy wants to suddenly change me $209.79 for “UNLIMITED” backup?  And when I need the files, that $209 dollars doesn’t cover the cost of having the files burned to  DVD and sent to me?  In the end, the price jump sealed the deal for me.

Hello Carbonite!!

Carbonite does NOT peg my hard drive, the performance of the client has been stupendous!  And here’s the kicker: I purchased a home premium subscription which includes the shipping of the DVD and I paid $149 for the year.  Now… Tell me, why on EARTH would  I stay with Mozy?

Carbonite is for sure deserving of my business and I’ll gladly support them over Mozy!

These days of austerity as well as relative anxiousness about running into debt, most people balk resistant to the idea of making use of a credit card to make acquisition of merchandise or pay for any gift giving occasion, preferring, instead only to rely on the actual tried as well as trusted way of making settlement - cash. However, in case you have the cash on hand to make the purchase in whole, then, paradoxically, this is the best time just to be able to use the credit cards for several motives.
